Plans are at an advanced stage for the celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2011 in Co Mayo. Seachtain na Gaeilge is a festival that gives everyone the chance to have fun and craic using the Irish language. Everyone is invited to participate in the various activities and to use whatever Gaeilge they have, be they fluent or with just a cúpla focal. This year’s festival will be celebrated from the 5th to the 17th March in the run up to our national feastday on the 17th March.
Seachtain na Gaeilge in Mayo will be launched in Ireland West Airport, Knock, on Weds, 2nd March, @ 8.30 p.m. and Séamus McCormack, Uachtarán of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will do the honours. As Comhaltas are celebrating their 60th birthday this year Coiste Mhaigh Eo of CCÉ are joining with Conradh na Gaeilge for the launch. All are invited along to the launching and you don’t need an invitation.
Ireland West Airport is an appropriate venue for the launching as the sky is the limit to the various events and activities planned for the county this year. Seachtain na Gaeilge is a National Festival organised by Conradh na Gaeilge and activities in Mayo are being organised by Togra Mhaigh Eo of Conradh na Gaeilge in conjunction with Coiste Dúiche Mhaigh Eo and CCÉ Mhaigh Eo. Togra Mhaigh Eo are delighted to be associated with what is one of the most successful ventures ever undertaken in this county, namely the airport founded by Monsignor James Horan, the enigmatic Parish Priest of Knock.
The venue will give Seachtain na Gaeilge a whole new image: an image of prosperity and success, an image of progression and hope, an image of limitless possibilities and a bright future. A spokesperson for the airport said that they are delighted to be associated with Seachtain na Gaeilge and that our language and culture are part of what we are.
The official launch will be followed by an evening of music, song and dance featuring some of the very best artists from Co Mayo and beyond. This is an evening not to be missed. Come along and have fun and craic and if you have a cúpla focal don’t be afraid to use them. Refreshments will be served and the bar will be open. Further information about the launching can be had by contacting Brídín at the Togra Mhaigh Eo office in Ellison St, Castlebar 094 9022444. The e-mail address is: [email protected]
